Historical Context

British light infantry battalions were elite formations trained for skirmishing, outpost duty, and rapid maneuver. Armed with the same Brown Bess musket as line infantry but trained in open-order tactics, they screened Wellington's army and harassed French columns. The bugler's calls directed these dispersed formations more effectively than drums. Light infantry wore wings on their shoulders and developed an elite esprit de corps.
