Historical Context

The 95th Rifles revolutionised British light infantry tactics. Armed with the Baker rifle - accurate to 200 yards versus the musket's 50 - they wore dark green uniforms for concealment and fought in open order. Trained to think independently and shoot accurately, Riflemen were the elite of Wellington's army. They screened the army's movements, picked off French officers, and held key positions. The prone firing position was revolutionary, providing stability and concealment. Rifle battalions also included the German King's German Legion (KGL) rifle companies, which were equally as skilled.
