Imperial French 4th battalion, 1807-1813

Imperial French 4th battalion, 1807-1813

This battalion pack represents a French 4th Line battalion following the Imperial reforms of February 1808, when Napoleon restructured his infantry regiments from two to four combat battalions. These hastily-formed units epitomised the Empire's later challenges - adequate numbers at the cost of reduced training and experience.

More info

Regiment’s 4th battalions combined elite companies from depot battalions with fresh conscripts, many barely trained. Though led by experienced officers promoted from the ranks, these formations lacked veteran cohesion.

Fusiliers comprised the four centre companies, while Grenadiers maintained elite status despite reduced experience. Voltigeurs provided light infantry capability. Officers, frequently newly promoted, demonstrated exceptional bravery leading these green troops, often suffering disproportionate casualties.

This pack provides a complete 4th battalion formation of 32 figures in march attack, with six skirmishes, representing the mix of veterans and recruits that characterised these units during Napoleon's later campaigns, from Wagram through to Waterloo.
