Dragoons served as versatile line cavalry in European campaigns from 1798 to 1807. All dragoon regiments were transferred to Spain in 1808, where they adapted to light cavalry roles in the guerrilla warfare of the Peninsula. Recalled to Europe in 1813, they resumed their traditional role as line cavalry for the campaigns in Germany and France.
