Imperial French Carabiniers à cheval (post 1812)
These carabiniers reflect the elevation of the unit to heavy cavalry status following their losses to Austrian heavy cavalry during the 1809 Danube campaign. Napoleon ordered them equipped with cuirasses and Roman-style helmets in 1812, transforming them from light cavalry into armoured shock troops of the reserve, which were repeatedly used in Russia in 1812 and Germany in 1813.
