Historical Context

This battalion represents Bavarian infantry who fought alongside the Grande Armée from Austerlitz to the retreat from Russia. Bavaria's alliance with Napoleon transformed the Electorate into a Kingdom and its army into one of the most effective German contingents. Formed along the French model of two elite companies and four fusilier companies, Bavarian line infantry distinguished by their light blue coats and Raupenhelm crested helmets, and Bavarian light, who wore green, provided reputable units for Napoleon’s campaigns, as well as worthy fighters for the Allies in 1814.
