Grenzer regiments drew from specific ethnic communities - Croats, Serbs, Romanians, and others - maintaining strong regional identities. These soldier-farmers lived in militarised communities where every able-bodied man served as both peasant and warrior, creating a permanent border defense system.

Initially established as border guards, they were used in the Seven Years War as highly mobile insurgency units.
