Historical Context

This battalion represents Austrian German infantry following the 1806 uniform reforms that introduced the shako and simplified flag traditions. The German designation for these line battalions of the K.K. Armee reflected their recruiting grounds within the historic territories of the Reich - Austria, Bohemia, and Moravia. After the catastrophes of 1805, Archduke Charles reformed the Austrian Army. Along with other things, Charles ordered the replacement of the helmet, introduced by the József Alvinczi Hofkommission in 1798, with a cheaper to produce and more comfortable to wear double peaked shako. These white-coated battalions fought at Aspern-Essling and Wagram in 1809, then returned to challenge Napoleon during the 1813-1814 campaigns.

The 1806 regulations reduced battalions to carrying a single standard, simplifying the earlier dual-flag system. The mounted officer in a cocked hat represents the Oberst or Oberstleutnant commanding the first or second battalion. Request AB-KK44 (Mounted officer, shako) to represent third battalion commanders (Majors). These battalions proved more effective than their predecessors, learning from past tactical mistakes, and commanded by professional, veteran officers, they contributed to Austria's eventual victory in 1814.
