Historical Context

This battalion represents the Austrian Landwehr militia established in 1809 as part of Archduke Charles's military reforms. Inspired by the French model and the general mobilisation of Lower Austrian in 1797, Austria mobilised its male population exempt from regular conscription to create territorial defense forces. These middle class soldiers from Upper and Lower Austria wore simplified uniforms - tunics or frock coats with the distinctive Corsehut cap for Upper and Lower Austrian units.

The Landwehr would prove crucial during the 1809 War, brigading with depleted regular units during the Battle of Wagram. During the Wars of Liberation (1813-1814), Landwehr battalions were the fourth battalion for line units, providing garrison troops and quick replacements for the regular formations in the field.
