Historical Context

Austrian Uhlan regiments introduced Polish-style lance cavalry to Habsburg armies following the partitions of Poland in 1771. The lance provided reach and shock power that proved effective against both cavalry and infantry. Uhlans combined traditional Polish cavalry tactics with Austrian organization, creating formations suitable for reconnaissance, screening, and aggressive charges. Their distinctive czapka caps and green uniforms made them instantly recognisable, while their lances added a weapon that had largely disappeared from Western European cavalry.
