This battalion represents Austrian German infantry during the Revolutionary Wars and early Napoleonic campaigns, distinguished by their distinctive Kaskett helmets. The German designation for these line battalions of the K.K. Armee reflected their recruiting grounds within the historic territories of the Reich - Austria, Bohemia, and Moravia. These white-coated regulars formed the backbone of Habsburg armies that challenged Revolutionary France and Napoleon's early Grande Armée. From Archduke Charles's reforms through the disasters at Ulm and Austerlitz, and on to Wagram these battalions combined traditional Habsburg discipline with evolving tactical doctrine.
The helmet remained the predominant German infantry headgear through the 1809 War, though details are sketchy regarding the transition to shakos. Some regiments, particularly Czech units like IR 47 Vogelsang, may have received shakos by 1809, but most German battalions still wore helmets during the Aspern-Essling and Wagram campaigns.
German regiments maintained the practice of carrying both the Ordinarfahne (regimental colour) and Leibfahne (colonel's colour) until 1805, requiring two standard bearers. The mounted officer in bicorne represents the Oberst (colonel) or Oberstleutnant (lieutenant colonel) commanding the first or second battalion. Third battalion commanders (Majors) wore helmets - request AB-KK43 to represent these formations.
