This battalion represents Wellington's redcoated infantry - the "thin red line" that broke French columns from Talavera to Toulouse. Centre companies formed the firing line while elite flank companies (grenadiers and light infantry) provided shock troops and skirmishers.
The two-rank formation and devastating volleys made British infantry feared across Europe. Officers led from the front, while sergeants with their pikes maintained discipline. The mounted officer represents the Lieutenant Colonel or Major commanding the battalion. Skirmishing figures allow representation of the light company screening the main formation.
